Add to Calendar »link »info »

WHAT:

LMU’s School of Film and Television is proud to announce the return of its eminent film festival, Il Cinema Ritrovato On Tour, on Friday and Saturday, February 21-22, with additional weekday screenings from February 24-26. All screenings are free and open to the public with RSVP. More information and RSVP links are available at lmu.edu/cinema.

WHERE:

All screenings are free and open to the public and will be held in the Mayer Theater (Communication Arts Building 100) on LMU’s Westchester campus at 1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Parking is free on weekends; paid parking is available from 8am to 8pm in Drollinger Parking Plaza, a short walk from the theater. To see the full program and to RSVP, visit lmu.edu/cinema.

WHEN:

February 21-22, 2020

WHY: Il Cinema Ritrovato On Tour is a traveling version of the prestigious Cineteca di Bologna’s Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, which takes place each summer and is dedicated to the history of cinema, classics, and retrospectives, as well as screening the latest restored films. “We’re thrilled to welcome this festival to our campus for the seventh year,” says Peggy Rajski, Oscar-winning filmmaker and dean of LMU’s School of Film and Television. “Seeing classic and meticulously restored works on the big screen enriches our students’ understanding of filmmaking, and we invite the local community to enjoy these works of art with us.”

FILM HIGHLIGHTS:

This year’s program will showcase nine films—a mix of titles ranging from top-notch world cinema to iconic Hollywood features. Restored films include Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambéty’s Touki Bouki (1973) and his last film, The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun (1999). The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun is restored in 2K from the original negative; this screening will be the L.A. premiere of the restoration. Touki Bouki is a DCP of the 2K digital restoration conducted by the Cineteca di Bologna and done in collaboration with the World Cinema Project, created from the original 35mm camera and sound negatives provided by the director's son, Teemour Diop Mambéty. Other world-cinema classics include Jane Campion’s Palme D’Or-winning film The Piano (1993), which will screen in 4K digital restoration done under Campion’s supervision for the film’s 25th anniversary in 2018.

Additional films include Agnès Varda’s last film Varda by Agnès (2019) and the classic French film noir, Elevator to the Gallows (Ascenseur pour l'échafaud) (1958).

LMU SFTV’s faculty and staff curate the Il Cinema Ritrovato On Tour program line-up each year from the archive of films selected to screen at Il Cinema Ritrovato. The 2020 program was curated by Guy Borlée (Festival Coordinator, Il Cinema Ritrovato), and LMU SFTV’s Dr. Richard Hadley, Dr. Carla Marcantonio, Dr. Alice Royer, and Stephen Ujlaki.
